Drinking More Water Makes for Younger Looking Skin

Women who are taking GLP-1 Agonists and experiencing a change in their skin or complain of low energy levels, often can remedy those side effects by increasing their daily water intake.

Water is often hailed as one of the simplest yet most effective beauty treatments. While the benefits of staying hydrated go far beyond skin health, there’s no denying that drinking enough water can dramatically improve the appearance of your skin.

It works from the inside out, boosting elasticity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and giving your complexion a youthful, radiant glow. I often add a pinch of Celtic or Himalayan salt to my water glass with a squeeze of lemon. The trace minerals in the salt allow your body to absorb the water in the cell at a higher rate than without adding the salt.

1. Improves Skin Elasticity

As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins that help maintain its firmness and structure. When the skin is properly hydrated, it retains more moisture, which supports elasticity and reduces sagging. Well-hydrated skin can "bounce back" more effectively, appearing firmer and more resilient.

When the skin lacks moisture, it can appear dry and dull, making fine lines and wrinkles more noticeable. Drinking more water helps replenish the skin's moisture levels from within, improving its overall texture and appearance. This process helps prevent premature aging and can help keep the skin looking supple over time.

Drinking 5 grams of Creatine in a glass of water or smoothie every day will boost water content in muscle cells. This will help your muscles look more full, creating a lean look on your body.

2. Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Dehydrated skin can exacerbate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When your skin cells don't have enough water, they shrink, making the skin less plump and more prone to the formation of creases and deep-set lines. By increasing your daily water intake, you can improve the skin's hydration levels, which plumps up skin cells and smooths out those lines.

Moreover, water plays a vital role in flushing out toxins from the body. The buildup of toxins can lead to inflammation and oxidative stress, which accelerates skin aging. Staying hydrated supports the body's natural detoxification processes, promoting a clearer and more youthful complexion.

3. Enhances Your Natural Glow

Dehydration can leave your skin looking tired and lifeless. When you're hydrated, your blood circulation improves, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach your skin cells. This results in a natural radiance that no amount of topical products can replicate.

Think of water as an internal moisturizer. Unlike creams or serums that only work on the surface, drinking water nourishes the skin from the inside out. This internal hydration helps improve the appearance of dullness and provides an even tone, giving you that dewy, glowing skin.

4. Helps Manage Skin Conditions

Skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis can be exacerbated by dehydration. When the skin's moisture barrier is compromised, it becomes more prone to irritation, redness, and flare-ups. Drinking more water helps maintain the integrity of the skin's protective barrier, making it more resilient to environmental stressors.

For those who struggle with oily skin, dehydration can actually make the problem worse. When the skin is dry, it compensates by producing excess oil, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. By drinking more water, you can help regulate the skin's oil production and maintain a balanced, healthier complexion.

5. Supports Overall Skin Health

Hydrated skin is healthy skin. In addition to reducing signs of aging, water aids in the delivery of essential nutrients to the skin and promotes cell regeneration. This helps heal wounds faster, reduces inflammation, and supports the repair of damaged skin tissues. It also helps with the absorption of nutrients from your diet, which are essential for skin health.

When the body is adequately hydrated, it can better regulate temperature and manage stress, both of which have a direct impact on the skin's appearance. High-stress levels and temperature imbalances can cause skin issues such as redness, puffiness, and even dark circles. Drinking enough water supports the skin's ability to cope with these factors, contributing to a calm and balanced complexion.

Tips for Staying Hydrated

  • Set a Daily Water Goal: Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water per day. You may need more if you live in a hot climate, exercise frequently, or consume dehydrating substances like caffeine or alcohol.

  • Eat Water-Rich Foods: Incorporate fruits and vegetables that are high in water content, such as cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges, to boost your hydration levels.

  • Use a Water-Tracking App: Apps can help you track your water intake and remind you to drink regularly throughout the day.

  • Keep a Water Bottle Handy: Having a bottle of water with you at all times makes it easier to sip throughout the day.

  • Listen to Your Body: Thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, and dark urine are signs that you’re already dehydrated and need more water.

When you’re taking GLP-1s for weight loss, oftentimes you don’t feel hungry or thirsty. All the more important to have a routine of making sure you can reach the goal of drinking 8-10 ounces of water a day. Some days you may have to force yourself to drink water, and that’s okay. Just remember all its benefits!
